Polk County remains under a flood watch, as does most of the state, according to emergency officials.

A flood watch means there is potential for flooding based on forecasts.

Randy Lacey, Polk County Public Safety director, sent out an alert stating portions of north Georgia and all of central Georgia are under a flood watch through Saturday afternoon.

The targeted flood watch area is primarily south of a line from Cedartown to Cumming and Homer, the alert said.

Residents can expect periods of heavy rain throughout today and Saturday with up to two inches of rain expected in north Georgia and up to four inches expected in central Georgia.

Another one to two inches of rain could fall in the flood watch area on Sunday, the alert said.

Localized flash flooding is possible. Storm drains, ditches and low-lying areas may quickly clog with debris, which could cause street flooding, according to Lacey.

There could also be minor flooding of the larger creeks and rivers. This includes the Chattahoochee, Flint, Ocmulgee and Oconee River Basins and their associated tributaries, which are mainly south of Atlanta to Athens.

Big Cedar Creek in Cedartown has risen in water levels to 6.59 feet, but that is a drop from earlier Friday morning when it was at 7.55 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet.

Today's forecast from the National Weather Service calls for showers with a high near 53. East wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Saturday A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.
