Update: An OSHA official contacted The Cedartown Standard Sunday afternoon to state that OSHA has an active investigation, which had already begun when this story was posted to The Polk Fishwrap's website.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is not investigating the accident occurring Tuesday at a Rockmart poultry plant, according to the administration’s public relations officials.

OSHA officials said the accident where a worker initially lost his arm at Tip Top Poultry Inc. has not been reported by the company.

The worker, whose name was not released by the company, is expected to make a full recovery. His arm was reattached in an extensive surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, according to Tip Top Poultry COO Brad Respess.

Under the law, companies are not mandated to report accidents unless there is either a fatality or more than three workers are injured, according to OSHA rules.

OSHA does have a National Emphasis Program for amputations, which has been ongoing since 1997. The program aims at reducing hazards within targeted workplaces where amputations are likely.

However, companies must become eligible to participate in that program. Eligibility is determined by a high number of violations and/or a high number of amputations and injuries, according to OSHA website information.

Tip Top is not in the program, according to OSHA officials.

Respess said the company is conducting an investigation to determine how the accident happened and how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
