JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — A candidate for sheriff won his election despite facing a 37-count indictment, which could bring a lengthy prison term if he's convicted.

Challenger Victor Hill defeated incumbent Clayton County Sheriff Kem Kimbrough in Tuesday's primary election. Hill got about 53.7 percent of the vote.

Hill has denied the allegations. The charges, which range from racketeering to witness tampering, stem from Hill's earlier term as sheriff in the county south of Atlanta.

Attorney Harlan Miller, who represented sheriff's deputies in a legal battle with the county, tells The Clayton News Daily that Hill is like a "bad ant bed" that's hard to get rid of.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that it's uncertain whether Hill will take office in January because Gov. Nathan Deal could suspend him until he goes to trial.
