Cedartown has placed a football team in state after all. The 12-and-under recreation football team along with members of the Panthers travel team have qualified to compete in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) state tournament.

According to Recreation Director Johnny Morris, the Cedartown All-Star team will travel to Americus on Saturday, Dec. 5. If they win there, they will advance to the state semifinals at Cass High School on Saturday, Dec. 12.

"They placed third at the District 5 tournament and will now go play the District 3 winner," Morris said. "The team did well at District."

Morris said they will not know the name of the team they will be playing until after Thanksgiving.

"It is down to the final eight teams," Morris said. "If we can pull out a win in this quarterfinal round we will be one of the final four teams in the state of Georgia. That's a huge accomplishment for these kids."

aikendawg is absolutely right. Give us names. Who doesn't want to be recognized for their accomplishments? From a newspaper standpoint, I'd think that you'd be interested in increasing readership and the kids, their families and friends would certainly be looking at the paper when there was but a chance their names would appear. Recognizing local kids in a local program has got to be a win win situation for a hometown newspaper.

Thanks to aikendawg for the comments and bringing this issue to the readers' attention and hopefully, to the attention of the newspaper.

Tell us who these players are. If you want stars in the future maybe you should start building enthusiasm. A great high school program starts with succsess in the youth leagues. I remember a time when all of the youth sports were covered by the newspaper. Now all we get is a short line that something happened, but no one knows exactly what happened. Stop glorifying the crooks and bring the good folks into the spotlight and it will make a difference.
