Katie Meadows is the new director of Life Choices in Rockmart.

She will replace Debbie Ross, who has lead the organization for the past several years.

Life Choices has also moved from 527 Jones Avenue to Crossview Community Church (old Goodyear School).

Although the church provides space for the organization, Meadows said it remains an independent agency.

“Our goal is the same,” she said. “We are here to support, assist and present options to clients that are faced with a life changing decision.”

She said that, as a mother, she understands the fears a young woman faces before the birth of a child. This is especially true for the first-time experience when many unanswered questions and fears present a challenge.

“A mother’s concern is based on the safety and health of her child,” she said. “You question if you will be a good parent and want to provide the support that will help your child grow up to be a good citizen.”

Numbers at the center have declined over the past 2 years. This could be attributed to a number of things, according to Meadows. She pointed out that some people could be unaware there is a local resource center or the fact that it has relocated.

Another factor could be due to the economy and the belief that a fee is charged.

“Our services are free,” Meadows said. “Even $20 can be a lot of money to someone without financial resources.”

Life Choices is open from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 12 to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Volunteers are needed and training is provided for those who wish to help one or more days when the center is open.

Ross has provided the following history for people not familiar with how the organization was founded.

In 1997, 10 people with a vision launched the outreach program.

The goal of this group was to help girls and women in the community in event of an unwanted pregnancy. The center would also offer Christian counseling with information about real choices. The group’s concern grew when they viewed statistics within Polk County.

Thereafter, a mission was defined as teaching girls that “no” is the best choice.

However, the idea was also to provide information on options. The facility was officially opened in August 1999.

It is designed to help these individuals transition from having their baby to being a new mother and give assistance with maternity or baby clothes.
