Georgia State Patrol (GSP) officials said the agency would be abandoning the building in Cedartown following a breakdown of negotiations with the Polk County Board of Commissioners, but it will not be abandoning the county.

According to a public statement released by the GSP’s public information office, the GSP has other options available the agency is currently exploring.

Troopers will continue to patrol Polk County and respond to traffic crashes and other calls for service in the same manner as they do currently, the statement said.

Officials said the GSP will turn the entire building over to Polk County has the end of October.

Commissioners gave the GSP a 60-day notice to vacate the facility effective Sept. 1, although they were willing to negotiate a new rental agreement before the vacating deadline.

The county was hopeful that the GSP would share office space with the Polk County Police Department (PCPD).

GSP officials said that was never a point they would deal on.

“Sharing space was not part of the original agreement for the current post and was never contemplated,” the statement reads

“GSP does not consider sharing space feasible.”

According to the GSP statement, patrol posts have traditionally been stand-alone facilities. The reasoning behind that is that sharing space with another law enforcement agency is not “conducive to the Department maintaining its standing as an independent, unbiased law enforcement agency.”

The GSP’s response states its agency has regulatory authority over some aspects of local law enforcement agencies, like emergency light permits and speed timing device permits.

It also conducts traffic crash investigations that sometimes involve other law enforcement agencies, the statement said.

These oversight tasks would be harder to perform independently if office space is shared.

The GSP statement said moving out will help the county and is the agency’s effort to “being the best neighbor we can be.”

“This should lower the renovation costs for the building and at the same time save taxpayer’s money while providing even more office space for Polk County Police,” the statement said.

Commissioners decided to use the building for additional PCPD space because more space was needed and the cost of renovating the building was more affordable than constructing a new one.

Chairman Cleve Hartley said in a recent called meeting that building a new facility would cost $1.5 million compared to $600,000 to reconfigure the GSP post building.

Such a move would free up money for investment in Economic Development and other needed infrastructure, he said.

Plain and simple people in the position that think they have all the answers and to think we pay them for this, that not any Polk County TAXPAYER wants this to happen to the STATE TROOPER POST. This building built with SPLOST FUNDS that tax payers voted on. This POST was built for STATE TROOPERS. Although the comissioners say "Administrative Building" that was built per State Patrol Specs with Barracks for housing Troopers out of town and situations that may arrise. The County was given the OLD POST that was sold and not ONE COMMISSONER COULD ANSWER THAT NIGHT WHEN DIRECTLY ASKED,WHEN IT WAS SOLD DID THAT MONEY GO BACK INTO THE SPLOST FUND ACCOUNT FOR FURTHER USE ON SPLOST PROJECTS,NOT ONLY ALL OF THEM WOULD NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION,NEITHER THE COUNTY MANAGER, NOR THE COUNTY ATTORNEY WOULD ANSWER. They were asked to find out and nothing has been said or proved otherwise. With that being said this needs be published or investigated on misappropriated funds being used elsewhere. POLK COUNTY DOES NOT NEED A BLACK EYE in this manner because of lame excuses. Now they will spend $600,000 of taxpayers money to remodel the POST when it DOES NOT need it for PCPD. It's already as nice as it needs to be. Come on GUYS where does it stop. What we as citizens of POLK COUNTY NEED is to come to a conclusion that we don't need this many Commisioners. Do as BARTOW COUNTY has done for years, HAVE ONLY 1 Commissioner and ONLY A SHERRIFF'S DEPARTMENT and run the County as it should be run. MORE EFFICIENTLY with less Money being spent and FEWER Problems.WITH THAT you have Less money going out and more TAXPAYERS MONEY saved to use elsewhere. My Hat's off to the STATE TROOPERS for the excellent job they do and the RESPECT THEY SHOW as to the training they go through. They show the representation of the STATE OF GEORGIA wherever they go. I can't help but be saddened to the way they are being treated from a COUNTY that they have Protected and Served for so many years and will continue to do so,yet from another POST. To have come to this, POLK COUNTY are we going to wake up and be heard as another Citizen has already said get out and vote and bring back what THE POLK COUNTY COMMISSIONERS had THROWN OUT THE DOOR.

I have only two questions that needs to be asked to the Polk County Commission. With the State Patrol leaving Cedartown because you wished to change the lease agreement for the building, what is the financial impact to the county budget, with the County getting lease payments for the building. And what is the financial impact to businesses in the County when those troopers take the money for meals somewhere. Some of the personal for the patrol had to stay at the post overnight, and they have to shop for food somewhere.

Perhaps outgoing Commissioner Hartley et al could explain why the Polk County Police Department (PCPD) needs additional space.

Perhaps the entire County Commission could explain why Polk County needs both a Sheriff's department (required by Georgia's Constitution) and a separate county police department. The excuses for the addition of the PCPD had no basis in logic or cost but were due to the wishes of some county commissioners at the time of the PCPD's creation.

Rather than "save taxpayer’s money while providing even more office space for Polk County Police", the Commission should save money by having one law enforcement body for Polk County. It would be really good to see the dollars saved by combining the two departments.

AzaleaLover I could not agree with you more. I have been wondering for year's why we are paying for Administrators for 2 agencies. The taxpayer could save money if the 2 were combined under the auspices of the PCSO. 1 agency under 1 roof would just make common sense. Why do we need 2 ?

Most law enforcement officials in uniform eat Free or at a discount, which I have no objection, they are putting their lives on the line for us every day.

If the Commission mentions a tax increase due to this terrible mistake they made, would everyone please show up at the meetings. That is why they run over us. No one shows up at the meetings or objects. They thought they could finagle the State Patrol into paying for the lease and letting PCP use part of the building. It is so easy to spend other people's money. It is time for a change. Vote in the upcoming election.
