UPDATE: A joint effort of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Floyd County Prison officials has led to the capture of escaped inmate Jack Belcher.

Warden Jeff Chandler said Belcher was captured at 7:40 p.m. Friday night in the Snellville area in Gwinnett County. He added Belcher had been in the Loganville area before his capture.

The arrest was made by leading investigator and task force member Jason Watson.

"He and everyone involved worked tirelessly during this 30-hour period to recapture the inmate," said Chandler.

Though Belcher was recaptured, as of 2 a.m. this morning Chandler said the City of Rome Public Works vehicle he fled in had not yet been found.

Chandler said further details will be released after an after-action report investigating the escape has been completed.

Regional fugitive squads have been called in to aid the apprehension of an escaped Floyd County Prison inmate who remained at large Friday.

Law enforcement agencies across Northwest Georgia have been joined by the Atlanta Fugitive Squad in search of the fugitive, who fled a work detail Thursday afternoon in Rome, according to Floyd County Prison Deputy Warden Terry Maynard.

Jack Belcher, 41, of Loganville, took off Thursday afternoon from a Floyd County Prison work detail near the Blossom Hill water treatment plant by driving off in a city of Rome work truck.

“There’s numerous possibilities to where he might be, but we don’t have anything concrete at the moment on his whereabouts,” Maynard said.

James M. Ergas, of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, confirmed Friday they have been called in to assist in locating the fugitive.

Belcher was serving his sentence after his conviction on charges of possession of methamphetamines, impersonating another individual and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to a Rome police report, Belcher asked to use the restroom at the water treatment plant, and a few minutes later, a correctional officer heard squealing tires as Belcher fled.

The vehicle was described as a white 2002 Ford F-150 pickup with green Rome Water Department logos on the side and a government license plate of 167102.

Belcher is described as a white male, approximately 5-feet-7-inches tall and weighing around 160 pounds, with dark hair and a mustache.
