A long-standing family squabble in Aragon erupted in altercations and ended with four members of the Abernathy family arrested.

According to Aragon Police Department reports and statements, Stephanie Robinson of the Aragon Florist at 4 Gurly St. called police Nov. 12 after a verbal argument at Abernathy Towing had become physical.

Arrested were Billy Abernathy, 59, of 4 Gurly St.; Quint Matthew Abernathy, 32, of 45 Walnut St., Aragon; Shalon Wilson Abernathy, 29, of 2070 Bellview Road, Rockmart; and Sharon Queen Abernathy of 2070 Bellview Road, Rockmart.

Billy Abernathy is charged with simple assault and aggravated battery. Quint Abernathy and Sharon Queen Abernathy are charged with disorderly conduct. Shalon Abernathy is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest/obstruction.

According to police, Corrisa Bannister was at the post office across the street when she decided to go to Abernathy’s business and confront him about an ongoing family conflict.

As the argument escalated, Abernathy said Bannister struck him in his mouth and in the rear of his head and neck. Police said he had no visible marks.

Abernathy told police he did strike Bannister and police later saw a large bruise around her right eye, a large scratch on the right side of her neck and a large bump on her back, reports said. Police said it was Bannister’s injuries that led to Abernathy’s arrest.

Regarding the other arrests, police said they were conducting interviews with Billy Abernathy, Bannister and Robinson when Quint Matthew Abernathy and his father, Larry Abernathy showed up.

Larry Abernathy is Billy Abernathy’s brother.

Reports state Quint Abernathy instantly became combative and was placed under arrest, handcuffed and put in the rear seat of a patrol car.

During Quint Abernathy’s arrest, Shalon Wilson Abernathy arrived and allegedly made verbal threats against the officer, which led to a physical altercation. Reports said she was then arrested, handcuffed and put into Chief Wayne Sanders car.

Reports state another woman, Sharon Queen Abernathy, who is married to Larry Abernathy, was arrested while officers were completing their investigation. According to the reports, Sharon Abernathy began making threats to both Billy and Larry Abernathy. She was placed under arrest after refusing to comply with officers’ demands to stop her comments.
