According to a press release, the Dixie 200 Relay is coming through Cedartown via the Silver Comet Trail. Runners started arriving around 1:45 p.m., and most of all the teams are expected to be through by 3:30 p.m.
The Dixie 200 Relay is a relay race made up of eight teams, being followed by vans. The race is a unique, overnight relay that covers 200 scenic miles from Atlanta to Birmingham on the Silver Comet Trail.
The race takes runners through fields, forests, and rolling hills as they end at Oak Mountain State Park in Birmingham.
The race started around 7 a.m. Friday morning and teams are expected to start arriving at Oak Mountain State Park around noon Saturday.
Teams for the Dixie 200 Relay are generally made up of four to 12 runners who split 36 legs.
An example given by organizers was that each person of a 12 person relay team would run three legs over distances from three to 10 miles. Each team provided support vans to drop off and pick up runners at designated exchange zones along the 200 mile route.
