Playing against Pepperell Middle School, the young Lady Bulldogs had a goal from four different players en route to a 4-1 win on Monday, March 26 while the Bulldogs had an even easier time, winning 8-2 over the Dragons.
“We had stand out players all over the field,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Chandler Gray.
Cedartown had goals from Azucena Pizano, Mariana Guzman, Tia Davis, and Jaqui Nunez.
“Jaqui is a sixth grader and started at forward for us,” Gray noted. “She was hustling to the ball and got a goal. Tia is one of our eighth graders and is just incredibly fast. Her speed causes problems for opposing defenders.
“Mariana is the kid that every coach loves to have. She plays a real tough, gritty style. She isn’t afraid of contact and she challenges defenders. Mariana is a sixth grader and she is a fantastic ball handler.”
Gray also had positive things to say about the Lady Bulldogs stopper, Samaria Bahena.
“She is the one who really sets up the counter punch,” Gray said. “She clears the ball back out to our forwards and they get to run with some open space in front of them. So many of the runs we had were because Samaria cleared the ball so well.”
Gray and his assistant coaches give a game ball after each win. He said the idea isn’t to give it to the statistically best player, but to the player whose performance most reflected what the team does and teaches.
“Tonight it was Azucena Pizano,” Gray said. “Azucena scored a goal and set up Tia Davis with a gorgeous assist. Azucena is a good ball handler, she is quick, and relentless.”
Gray also stated that he was happy with his teams victory.
“All in all, I was very happy with the performance and the win,” Gray said. “We do have to work on a few things and I want to get some younger players more playing time.”
For the young Bulldogs, they won 8-2 behind the impressive play of Luis Reyes.
Reyes had five goals in the game. Rony Mendez, Jerry Ramos, and Jonatan Gomez also had goals in the season-opener. Luis Torres contributed five assists in the contest.
Head coach Lynda Wiggins gave the game ball to Bolivar Cordero, the goal keeper. Wiggins stated he earned the game ball for stopping several goals.
Cedartown plays again Friday, visiting Coosa for a league contest.
