Cedartown sports legend Howard ‘Doc’ Ayers, who coached the Cedartown Bulldogs to their lone state title in football in 1963 and who also coached at the University of Georgia, will take part in a reunion of the 1965 University of Georgia freshman football class Friday at the Governor’s Mansion with Gov. Sonny Perdue.

Perdue, who played on the 1965 team that Ayers coached, will hold the casual attire reunion with his wife Mary Friday evening. The 1965 team went undefeated under Ayers guidance.

“I am really looking forward to seeing many of the old players,” Ayers said.

The always quick-witted Ayers also noted, “If I had known that Perdue was going to become Govenor then I would have named him captain of the team and put him on scholarship.”

Some of the notable players that were on the 1965 team were Kent Lawrence, Jake Scott, Bill Stanfill, Brad Johnson, Happy Dicks, Steve Greer, Billy Payne and Judge Mike Murphy.
